Concert tribute to a fighter, Mosman Daily 1993 Concert tribute to a fighterThe Kids Like Brett campaign is running a second charity concert at North Sydney Leagues Club to support bone marrow transplants and children with cancer.
And little Brett Jones of North Sydney, who was diagnosed as having the rare Zezelhof Syndrome, a severe combined immune deficiency syndrome, when he was just six months old, will be four on the day of the concert. His father Steve who runs the campaign to raise funds for bone marrow transplants and medical equipment to help children says only seven other Australian children have been affected by the syndrome, and there have been only about 20 cases in the world. Bretts parents were told he only had a 30 per cent chance of survival and a bone marrow transplant was his only chance. His mother, Roslyn, donated her marrow and Brett had the transplant just before his first birthday. But that was not the end of the youngsters battle for life. He had to have a central line inserted into his chest to connect with the main artery to his heart, and to administer drugs and liquid food. Over the following 12 months he had six of these lines inserted and he experienced so much pain one of the six machines attached to him supplied him with pain-relieving morphine. Big-hearted Dad, Steve, was so impressed by the medical help and treatment his young son received, he rallied to help other children. He founded Kids Like Brett, which has so far raised $80,000 for equipment for Camperdown Childrens Hospital. Former Leader of the Opposition, Liberal Member John Howard, who lives at Wollstonecraft, is patron of Kids Like Brett. And Australian Associated Motor Insurers Ltd known to most of us as AAMI has just signed on as corporate sponsors, donating $10,000 to the charity. The concert is on Saturday June 5 at North Sydney Leagues Club at 8pm and features Warren Daly and his Big Band, with swing vocals from Marty Thompson. Tickets are $15. Bookings can be made directly to the Club or to Steve Jones on 9955 5494.
